UF Health Shands Hospital is the teaching hospital for the University of Florida, College of Medicine and is located in Gainesville, Florida, in the north central portion of the state. UF Health Shands Hospital at the University of Florida is a full-service 766-bed general medical and surgical hospital with over 44,000 annual admissions that offers a full complement of patient-care services, both inpatient and outpatient. It is a Level 1 Trauma Center that is nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report in 7 adult and 6 pediatric specialties and listed as high-performing in 5. It contains an embedded UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital and a connected UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital (“South Campus”) in addition to outpatient facilities within walking or shuttle bus distance (Medical Plaza, Orthopedic Institute). The hospital is affiliated with the University of Florida Health Science Center, which consists of six colleges.

The University of Florida campus is fully integrated with all disciplines on-site in Gainesville, including all professional colleges such as engineering, veterinary medicine and public health and health professions. DIMPR residents have ready access to the COM Health Center Library within the Shands Hospital/UF Health Center complex.

Gainesville, Florida

The University of Florida campus in Gainesville is essentially the only University of Florida campus. Therefore, in addition to all academic and professional schools being located in Gainesville, all home athletic events are held in Gainesville. (Go Gators!) The campus houses the Florida Museum of Natural History, the Harn Museum and the Performing Arts Center in addition to several other art galleries and performing arts venues.

The Gainesville area has a population of approximately 150,000.  It is largely a college town, and, for a city of its size, it has a lot of cultural activities. Gainesville offers a variety of fun events and is in driving distance from several fresh water springs and lakes, as well as legendary amusement parks and beaches. International airports are easily accessible in Jacksonville, Tampa and Orlando. Yearly temperatures average a moderate 71 degrees with summer highs in the 90s and winter lows in the 40s.
