Procedures and Equipment

Common Procedures During Fellowship:

  • Interventional Oncology:
    • Y90 mappings and treatments. Dosimetry is taught and practiced as part of the didactic and clinical curriculum. TACE is also a part of our intra-arterial tumor treatment algorithm.
    • Percutaneous tumor ablations via cryoablation, microwave, IRE, and RF modalities.
  • Hepatobiliary:
    • TIPS
    • Biliary drainage procedures. Most commonly internal external drainage catheters. Also biliary stenting and percutaneous lithotripsy procedures.
  • VTE:
    • PE and DVT thrombectomy procedures including multiple thrombectomy platforms: Cat 12, Inari, Alpha Vac, EKOS, etc.
    • IVC filter placements and removals. Outside removal referrals are commonly for complex retrievals.
  • Trauma:
    • Post trauma angiograms and embolization.
  • GU:
    • Uterine fibroid embolization.
    • Prostate artery embolization.
    • Percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN)/nephroureteral catheter placement, ureteral stent placement.
  • Pain management:
    • Kyphoplasty, vertebroplasty, Spine Jack. Osteo Cool.
    • Peripheral nerve blocks, e.g. celiac plexus blocks. Cryoneurolysis is also offered.
  • Dialysis access maintenance:
    • Dialysis graft/fistula declots and maintenance procedures.
    • Percutaneous AV fistula creation with the Ellipsys system.
  • Basic IR Procedures:
    • Temporary and tunneled (both antegrade and retrograde options) catheters. Long term central venous access, dialysis, pheresis, etc.
    • Port placements. Including pheresis ports.
    • Gastrostomy and gastrojejunostomy tubes.
    • Most biopsies at our institution are performed by our Body Radiology division. Fellows gain experience with transjugular liver biopsies and bone marrow biopsies.
    • Drainage procedures. Our Body Radiology division covers these procedures during regular business hours. During call hours, our fellows gain experience in these procedures.
  • Pediatrics:
    • UF Health Shand’s Children’s Hospital is a 208 licensed bed children’s hospital. The UF Health Pediatric ICU has 24 beds.
    • Pediatric IR procedures are performed during fellowship training.

    • 13 and 16*: Toshiba flat panel
      • 16 scheduled for replacement in 2023
    • 14 and 15: floor mounted older equipment used for minor procedures
  • South tower
    • ST 1: Philips flat panel
    • Hybrid OR: Philips flat panel
  • East tower
    • Occasionally cases are performed in a hybrid OR in the east tower, Siemens Zeego
  • IR Clinic
    • Conveniently located in the department
    • Space for consultation and examination prior to scheduled procedures
    • Outpatient minor procedures
  • IR Holding – Radiology Care Unit (RCU)
    • 15 beds, serving IR, body IR, neuro IR
    • Conveniently located to IR in the North tower
    • Outpatients are prepped and recovered in this space
